Our story

Hear more from the founders of Our Journey to Cure T1D, Jano and Paul Yousseph.

In May 2024, we brought together 13 dedicated cyclists for a 130km ride from Bella Vista to Bowral, honouring our close friend, Sebastian Stafford. Sebastian passed away in September 2023 due to diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and we wanted to do something meaningful in his memory - something that would raise awareness of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its impact. In its first year, our ride raised over $45,000 for Diabetes Australia and Breakthrough T1D.

But as we rode alongside others who live with T1D, supported by families, friends, and the wider community, we realised this was about more than just Sebastian’s journey - it was our journey. Every rider had a story, every kilometre carried a shared determination. That’s why we’ve expanded our vision. What started as a tribute is now an annual event: Our Journey to Cure T1D. It’s a ride for all of us living with or affected by T1D, united by a common goal: to turn type 1 into type none.

In 2025, we’re setting our sights even higher. Our goal is to raise $100,000, and this time, the challenge is even bigger. On Saturday 3 May, a small group of us will ride from Sydney to Bowral - 140km of road, grit, and determination. Then, on Sunday 4 May, we’ll be joined by the rest of our incredible team for the main ride from Bowral to Parramatta Park, pushing through a massive 280km over two days. This ride mirrors the unpredictable, uphill battle of life with T1D, but it also represents hope, resilience, and the strength of our community.

Our Journey to Cure T1D is more than just a ride. It’s a movement. It’s about proving that no one faces this disease alone, that together, we can push through every challenge, and that one day, we will find a cure.

Join us as we ride or celebrate with us at the finish line - because together, we can change the future of T1D.
